What Is Barre and Why Women Have Fallen for It
What is barre? A workout that combines ballet, Pilates and yoga. Discover the benefits, who barre is for and why it has become women's favourite workout.
Read moreBarre is a workout inspired by ballet, Pilates and yoga — small, precise movements repeated until the muscles make themselves known. At PALMA Studio in Wrocław's Krzyki district we teach it in small women-only groups, with no jumping, no ballet background and no Polish needed — trainers teach in English, Ukrainian and Russian too. You work at the barre and on the mat, in socks, at a calm pace.

We begin with a warm-up and posture setup, so the body eases into movement calmly and consciously. Then comes the section at the barre — the French word barre means the ballet rail the workout is named after, and here it serves as a support, not a ballet exam. The barre helps you keep your balance, so you can focus on precision of movement instead of on staying upright.
The heart of the class is small, short-range movements repeated many times: work for the legs, glutes, abdominals and arms, always with control and breath. From the outside it looks elegant and light — inside, the muscles are working very hard. There are no jumps or sudden loads, so the training is gentle on the joints.
Part of the exercises we do on the mat, in a format close to barre au sol — "barre on the floor" — the same ballet-based movement patterns, just lying and seated, without loading the spine. We finish with stretching and winding down. The trainer corrects alignment as you go and offers an easier or harder version of every exercise.

See the price listBarre is a workout inspired by ballet exercises, combining elements of ballet, Pilates and yoga. Its signature is small, precise, short-range movements repeated many times — they make the muscles work deeply even though the whole thing looks calm and elegant. The name comes from the French word barre, the ballet rail at which part of the exercises are done.
No. Barre borrows movement patterns, aesthetics and posture work from ballet, but it is not classical dance tuition. We do not teach ballet routines or steps, and there are no pointe shoes. It is a body-shaping and posture workout in a ballet style — which is why it is sometimes called a ballet-inspired fitness class.
Both focus on precision, control and the deep muscles, so they complement each other well. Pilates works mostly from lying and seated positions, at a slower rhythm, with a strong emphasis on breath and the spine. Barre is more dynamic, set to music and largely done standing at the barre, with a stronger accent on the legs and glutes.
No. The vast majority of barre participants have never danced ballet, and it is no obstacle at all. We teach the exercises from scratch, and the trainer gives easier and harder variants, so everyone works at their own level. If you are just starting your movement journey, barre is one of the friendlier choices — and you can ask questions in English, Polish, Ukrainian or Russian.
Barre is done in socks — the most comfortable are ones with a grippy sole, because they give you sure contact with the floor when working at the barre. You will not need trainers.
Women who train barre regularly most often notice stronger glutes and legs, a more stable centre, upright posture and better control of movement. The silhouette becomes more sculpted and springy, without building large muscle mass. How fast things change depends on consistency, your starting point and daily habits, so we do not promise specific timelines — give yourself a few weeks of steady work.
