Yoga for Beginners — How to Start and What You Need
Yoga for beginners — how to start, what you need and how to choose your first class. A practical, stress-free guide for every woman.
Read moreYoga (joga) at PALMA Studio is a calm practice of breath, balance and quiet, held in a small boutique studio at ul. Armii Krajowej 14C in Wrocław's Krzyki district. We practise in small women's groups — from first-time beginners to long-time yoginis — and English speakers are genuinely at home here: classes run in Polish, Ukrainian, Russian and English. You can start with a no-obligation trial class.

We start by settling down and breathing — a few minutes in which you leave the rest of the day at the door and check in with how you arrived on the mat. The trainer guides the breath, because breath sets the rhythm of the whole practice and decides whether the poses are work or a fight.
Then comes the warm-up and a sequence of poses: spinal mobility, opening the chest and hips, strengthening the legs, core and back, balance work. Poses are shown with variants — an easier one and the full one — and we use props like blocks or straps where needed. In a small group the trainer has time to come over and adjust your alignment instead of teaching "at the room".
We finish with release and relaxation — the part many people come to yoga for in the first place. There is no judging here: you do not need to reach the floor or stand on your head for the practice to make sense.

See the price listHatha yoga is a calm, classical style in which poses are held longer and the practice is built around the breath, instead of flowing quickly from pose to pose. That leaves time to set the body up precisely and for the trainer to correct the details. It is a good starting point for beginners and for anyone who comes to yoga mainly for calm and mobility work.
Yes. You do not need any preparation or to "be flexible" — flexibility is a result of practice, not an entry requirement. Every pose is shown in an easier and a full version, and in small groups the trainer sees each person and coaches as you go. Tell her before class that it is your first time and mention any issues — she will pick safe variants. You can do all of that in English, Polish, Ukrainian or Russian.
Comfortable clothing you can fold forward in, and a bottle of water — that is enough. Yoga is practised barefoot and socks are optional, so you do not need to bring shoes into the room. Mats and equipment are provided, but if you prefer your own mat, you are welcome to bring it. Something warm for the final relaxation is a good idea, and come a few minutes early to change without rushing.
Both work on posture, breath and body awareness, but they place the accents differently. Pilates is more "technical" — focused on deep muscles, control and precision of movement. Yoga combines bodywork with breath and attention, has a more pronounced winding-down part and usually more mobility. Many participants at PALMA combine the two and treat them as complementary.
No — that is the most common misconception about yoga. Flexibility is the outcome of regular practice, not the ticket in. In class we use pose variants and props such as blocks and straps, so the same pose works for a very mobile person and for someone just starting out. Alignment and breath matter more than range of motion.
Yes — pregnancy yoga is a separate class variant with us, adapted to this stage: it supports wellbeing, mobility and posture, and gently prepares the body for birth. We also offer individual Pilates programmed around the stage of pregnancy. For the safety of mum and baby we recommend starting only when your doctor sees no contraindications — if in doubt, consult them first.
Booking is online in the Fitssey system — you pick a slot in the schedule and reserve your place. A trial class costs 50 zł and comes with no obligation: you meet the studio, the trainer and the atmosphere, and decide about a pass later. You can cancel a booking yourself in the app, without losing the entry, up to 6 hours before the class starts.
