Postnatal Yoga — When It's Safe to Return to Exercise

After a baby is born, many women long to return to movement — for their health, wellbeing and a moment for themselves. But the body after birth needs time and a wise approach. Yoga is a great choice here, because it lets you return gently and with care. We explain when to start and what to keep in mind.

When to return to exercise after birth

After a natural birth

After an uncomplicated natural birth, gentle breathing exercises and pelvic floor activation can often begin during the recovery period, as soon as you feel ready. Most women return to a fuller yoga practice after the recovery period ends (around 6 weeks) — always after a consultation.

After a C-section

A C-section is surgery — healing needs more time and care. The return to exercise is usually later, and the abdomen has to be rebuilt especially gently. Here, working with your doctor and possibly a women's health physiotherapist is very valuable.

Pelvic floor and abdominal muscles — start here

After birth, the key is rebuilding the pelvic floor and deep abdominal muscles. They form a natural corset and affect the health of your spine, your posture and your everyday comfort. Gentle yoga and diaphragmatic breathing activate them beautifully. It's also worth checking for abdominal separation (diastasis recti) — if in doubt, consult a physiotherapist.

Where to start — the first steps

  1. Breathing. Calm diaphragmatic breathing is the foundation of recovery and relaxation.
  2. Pelvic floor activation. Gentle, conscious contractions and releases.
  3. Gentle mobility. Releasing the tight back, shoulders and neck (from carrying your baby).
  4. Gradual strengthening. Only once the foundation is ready do we add more.

Yoga as a moment for mum

Returning to movement isn't only about the body. For a new mum, a class is also a moment to breathe and be with yourself. Yoga helps lower stress and fatigue — we write about its effect on wellbeing in the article how exercise helps you cope with stress. And if you're planning another baby or want to know more about practising during pregnancy, take a look at prenatal yoga.
