Pilates and a Healthy Spine — How Exercise Helps Your Back
Pilates and a healthy spine — how Pilates strengthens your back, eases pain and improves posture. Find out why it's one of the best workouts for your spine.
Read morePilates at PALMA Studio is a women's class in a small, boutique studio at ul. Armii Krajowej 14C in Wrocław's Krzyki district. We work on deep core muscles, posture and mindful breathing — calmly, in small groups where the trainer sees every person. Classes are taught in English as well as Polish, Ukrainian and Russian, and you start with a no-obligation trial class.
We start calmly: with body alignment and breathing. The trainer shows you how to find a neutral position for the pelvis and spine, and how to connect the inhale and exhale with movement — this is the foundation of all Pilates, and it decides whether the exercises that follow work the way they should.
The main part is a sequence of mat exercises: deep abdominal and back work, spinal mobility segment by segment, strengthening of the glutes and shoulder girdle, balance and control drills. Every exercise has an easier and a harder version, so someone at their very first class can comfortably train in the same group as someone who has been coming for months.
At the end we stretch what has been working and let the breath settle. There is no competition here — the pace is set so every movement can be done precisely. If something hurts or feels wrong, you tell the trainer and get a different version of the exercise.

See the price listPilates strengthens the deep abdominal and back muscles — the ones that stabilise the spine — and improves spinal mobility and body control. The result participants mention most often is better posture, a leaner silhouette and less stiffness after a day at a desk. It is precise, calm training — you work on quality of movement, not on rep counts or weights.
We usually recommend twice a week — a rhythm that gives the body time to rest without starting from zero at each class. Once a week also makes sense, especially at the beginning or with a busy calendar; results simply come more slowly. Consistency matters most, so it is better to choose a time slot you can realistically keep for a few weeks.
It is very individual and depends on your starting point, how often you come and what happens outside the studio. Usually what changes first is what you feel — body awareness, breathing, a freer back — and only later what you see in the mirror. With regular classes, participants describe the first noticeable changes after a few weeks. We do not promise specific timelines or outcomes, because that would be dishonest.
Pilates is often chosen by people with a complaining back, because it strengthens the muscles that stabilise the spine and teaches better posture. It is not a medical treatment, though, and it does not replace a diagnosis. If the pain is strong, sharp or persistent, see a doctor or physiotherapist first. Always tell the trainer about any issues before class — she will pick safer versions of the exercises.
For women of any age and any level: beginners, those returning to movement after a break, desk workers, and those who already train other disciplines and want a complement. Because we work in small groups, the trainer can match the version of an exercise to a specific person, not to the room's average. If you have any health contraindications, let us know before you start.
Yes. Pilates starts from the basics — breathing and alignment — and every exercise has an easier version. Come a few minutes early and tell the trainer it is your first class and whether anything bothers you; trainers speak English as well as Polish, Ukrainian and Russian, so you can say it in whichever language is easiest. A small group means the trainer sees you throughout and coaches you as you go. Nobody expects you to do everything perfectly straight away.
Booking is online in the Fitssey system — you pick a slot in the schedule and reserve your place. A trial class costs 50 zł and comes with no obligation: you visit, meet the studio and the trainer, and only then decide about a pass. If you cannot make it, you can cancel in the app without losing the entry up to 6 hours before the class starts.
