Pilates and a Healthy Spine — How Exercise Helps Your Back

Back pain is one of the most common complaints among women today — the result of a sedentary lifestyle, carrying children and constant rushing. Pilates is regarded as one of the most effective and safest workouts for the spine. We explain why Pilates is so good for your back and how it works.

What Pilates is and why it works on the back

Pilates is a training method focused on the deep postural muscles — those that stabilise the spine and pelvis. Instead of working on 'show muscles', Pilates builds an inner muscular corset (the core) that holds your posture and takes the load off the spine in everyday movements. It's training in control, precision and breath, not in strength records.

How Pilates helps the spine

  • Strengthens the muscular corset — a strong core stabilises the spine and reduces the load on it.
  • Improves posture — it teaches you to hold your body consciously, which relieves the back.
  • Increases mobility — gentle movements improve the spine's range of motion.
  • Eases tension — it releases tight muscles in the back and hips.
  • Teaches body awareness — you start to notice when you slouch and to correct it.

Who Pilates is for

Pilates is exceptionally versatile and gentle, so it suits most people:

  • people with sedentary work and back pain,
  • mums after birth getting back into shape (after a consultation),
  • women of any age who want to take care of their posture,
  • beginners — Pilates can be adapted to your level.

Pilates and other forms of movement

Pilates works wonderfully with other classes. Combined with stretching it improves flexibility, and with elements of foam rolling (MFR) it releases tense tissue even more effectively. That's why in our studio we often combine these approaches.
