Your Child's Safety in Acrobatics Classes — What to Look For

Your Child's Safety in Acrobatics Classes — What to Look For

Parents associate acrobatics with somersaults and flips — and from there it's just a step to the question of safety. It's an understandable and very important question. The good news is that well-run acrobatics is completely safe and gives a child a great deal. The key lies in the quality of the classes. We'll suggest what to look out for.

Is acrobatics safe for a child

Yes — with the right guidance the risk of injury is small, and the benefits (strength, coordination, body awareness, self-confidence) are huge. Acrobatics also teaches a child controlled falling and control over their body, which paradoxically reduces the risk of injury outside the hall too. The whole art lies in introducing elements gradually and sensibly.

What to look for — a checklist for parents

When choosing acrobatics classes, check these points:

  1. The coach's qualifications and experience. Does the instructor have training to work with children and know the rules of spotting?
  2. Group size. In a small group the coach sees every child and can spot them in real time. This is the foundation of safety.
  3. Spotting and a gradual build-up of difficulty. New elements always with the coach's help first, step by step — never 'by force'.
  4. Equipment and the surface. Suitable mats, crash pads, a clean and safe space.
  5. Warm-up. Every class should begin with a solid preparation of the body.

The role of warm-up and preparation

Most injuries can be avoided thanks to a good warm-up and a wise building of the base. A child first develops strength, flexibility and balance (that is, a gymnastics foundation), and only then moves on to more dynamic elements. Rushing is the biggest enemy of safety.

How to prepare your child

A few simple things on your side:

  • Comfortable clothes — close-fitting, not restricting movement, with no loose elements.
  • A light meal — not right before the class, but not on an empty stomach either.
  • Good hydration — a water bottle always at hand.
  • Calm and trust — a child senses your stress; your calm gives them confidence.
