Cheerleading for Kids — What It Offers and Who It's For

Cheerleading is associated with energy, colour and team coordination — and rightly so. But it's also a full-fledged sporting discipline that combines dance, gymnastics, acrobatics and teamwork. For many children it's the perfect mix of movement and group play. See exactly what cheerleading offers and who it suits best.

What cheerleading actually is

Cheerleading is a team discipline in which children perform routines combining dance, gymnastic and acrobatic elements, often with pom-poms, to rhythmic music. Synchronisation, energy and creating the routine together are what count. It's a sport in which nobody is alone — success is always the result of the whole team's work.

What cheerleading gives a child

Cheerleading develops a child in a very all-round way — physically and socially:

  • Fitness and coordination — it combines strength, flexibility, rhythm and balance.
  • A sense of rhythm and musicality — a child learns to hear the music and move in time with it.
  • Teamwork — it's a sport where the whole group matters, not individual rivalry.
  • Self-confidence — performing together teaches courage and coping with stage nerves.
  • Discipline and responsibility — everyone is an important part of the routine.

From what age and for whom

Cheerleading classes for the youngest usually start from the age of 5–6, when a child can already cooperate in a group and repeat simple movement sequences. It's a great choice for children who:

  • love music, dance and moving to a rhythm,
  • feel good in a group and enjoy acting together,
  • need a boost of self-confidence and courage,
  • have lots of energy that's worth channelling.

If your child is more of an individualist or prefers calmer movement, gymnastics and acrobatics or ballroom dance will work just as well.

Is cheerleading safe

As in any discipline that involves acrobatics, safety depends on the quality of how the classes are run. The key factors are: an experienced coach, gradually introducing elements, spotting and a suitable surface. In a small group the coach sees every child, which adds to safety. You'll find more practical tips in the article on safety in acrobatics classes.
