Work, home, children, the daily rush — stress has become a constant companion for women today. We reach for all sorts of ways to soothe it, while one of the most effective is within arm's reach: movement. Physical activity is a natural, proven way to lower tension. We explain how it works and what to practise.
What stress does to the body
Under stress, the body triggers the 'fight or flight' response: levels of cortisol and adrenaline rise, muscles tense, breathing speeds up. This is helpful in sudden danger, but when stress is chronic, the body has no chance to discharge it. Hence the tight shoulders, headaches, sleep problems and constant fatigue.
How movement discharges tension
Exercise works on stress on several levels at once:
- It lowers stress hormone levels — activity helps 'burn off' excess cortisol and adrenaline.
- It releases endorphins — natural 'happiness hormones' that lift your mood.
- It relaxes the muscles — conscious movement and stretching release physical tension.
- It calms the breath — breath work activates the parasympathetic system (relaxation mode).
- It gives you a moment for yourself — a class is time when your mind rests from everyday matters.
Which exercises work best against stress
Almost any movement helps with stress, but forms that combine body and breath are especially effective:
- Yoga — a blend of movement, breath and calming down. Ideal for tension. See yoga for beginners.
- Stretching — it releases tight muscles and gives a feeling of relief. More in the article on stretching.
- Pilates — conscious work with the body and breath that quiets the mind.
- Dance — the joy of movement and music is a natural shot of good energy.
Consistency makes the difference
A single class will bring relief straight away, but real resilience to stress is built by consistency. The body and mind learn to return to balance. A friendly atmosphere and the feeling of being in the right place help with this — we write about why small classes work better than a big, anonymous gym in the text why small groups are better than big gyms.
