Stretching — How to Increase Flexibility Safely

Dreaming of the splits? Or maybe you just want to get rid of stiffness in your back and hips? Stretching is the key to greater flexibility and freedom of movement. But you have to stretch wisely — forcing it can do harm. We'll show you how to increase flexibility safely and effectively.

Why flexibility matters

A flexible body isn't just splits for show. Good mobility means less tension, better posture and a lower risk of injury in everyday life. Stretching releases tight muscles (especially after hours at a desk), improves circulation and gives a feeling of lightness. It's an investment in your body's comfort for years to come.

Types of stretching

Static stretching

Classic stretching — you hold the position for several dozen seconds. It works best after training and when working on your range of motion. Calm and safe, as long as you don't push too hard.

Dynamic stretching

Smooth, controlled movements within your range of motion — ideal for a warm-up before exercise, because they prepare the muscles for work.

The most common stretching mistakes

These mistakes can undo the effects and even lead to injury:

  • Stretching cold — without a warm-up you risk a strain. Always warm up your body first.
  • Forcing it through pain — stretching should be felt, but not painful. Pain is a stop signal.
  • Bouncing — abruptly 'pushing' into a position strains muscles and joints.
  • Holding your breath — calm breathing helps the muscles relax.
  • Impatience — flexibility builds over weeks, not in a single evening.

How to practise to see results

  1. Consistency over intensity. Better short but often than once in a while to the point of pain.
  2. Warm up. A few minutes of movement before stretching is essential.
  3. Breathe. A calm exhale helps you deepen the position.
  4. Be patient. Your body needs time — the results will come.

Stretching combines wonderfully with other forms of movement. After Pilates it relaxes the muscles, and paired with foam rolling (MFR) it improves mobility even more effectively.
